Dirt in tank is going to the pump, usually inlet. The screen in the tank can only be so fine or it would not pass oil. This means dirt in the tank will pass through.
Don't blame the oil cap. Any saw can use this.

Appreciate the reminder. I once thought the cap was the issue for a clogged pump, but you're right the dirty fill area is usually to blame. Now I always clean that spot first and my saw runs much happier for it.
