How you got into chainsaw work

Everyone remembers the first time they picked up a chainsaw whether it was lending a hand on a project, clearing some brush, or just a spark of curiosity to figure things out. That experience tends to stick with you and shapes how you handle it now.

What got you into chainsaw work? We’d love to hear your story of how you learned or what inspired you.

Started using a chainsaw when I was helping my dad clear out some brush. I've been hooked on it ever since.

The first time I ever used one was on my uncle’s farm. He gave me an old saw and told me to help clean up after a storm. I was pretty nervous at first, but after a few cuts, I figured it out and felt pretty good. That taught me to respect the tool, and it gave me the confidence to keep learning

I had a summer job cutting firewood back in college. That's when I learned the basics, and I realized how much better things are with the right saw.

When I was old enough, dad let me cut up stuff on the ground for firewood. I grew up with wood heaters and it wasn't until I moved out on my own that I ever had a meal other than from a wood cook stove. Really started using a saw on my own though in my late teens cutting and selling cedar logs and firewood for some pocket money. Then some school and a job for awhile before it becoming part of a career 26 years ago

I had to clear my lot where I live in Chester, Virginia back in 1999 so I bought a new Stihl 021. I had a Homelite but it wasn't running right and I couldn't find parts for it. My first time using a chainsaw was in 1988 when a tornado blew down some trees. Now I just turned 65 and retired so I'm learning how to work on my old 021 myself. I was an aircraft mechanic in the service so I'm mechanically inclined but just never worked on these little engines.

It’s really great to hear how long you’ve been keeping that 021 going! Thanks for your service as well. With your mechanic background, I bet you’ll have no trouble at all keeping that engine in great shape.

Bought a house in the sticks. Had three huge basswood trees in the front yard. The power company took them down for me. I then had to cut and split the up. (slit by hand). Not great wood, but heat the house with it 1977-78. Remember WNY those years?
Father in law introduced me to the Remington Super 660. I cut the whole 3 trees up with that beast.
Got a McCulloch 10-10 the next year. Decent saw.
Bought it from the man I would go to work for in 1981 at the Stihl dealership. Still there

Cut 20 face cord a year for 20 years until we sold the place. Went to Stihl saws when I started at the shop.

Wow, what a journey you've had. Starting with Remington and McCulloch then dedicating decades of hard work before finally landing at Stihl. That’s some serious commitment.
