200T Questions

I picked up a rebuilt used 200T and I have a few questions. The clutch side cover does not fit very well and there is a gap at the top and rear of the cover. It appears to me that the pin inside the cover that goes into the cylinder is too long. The cover also pinches the chain at the bottom between the two chain bumpers preventing the chain from moving on the bar. The part number on the cover is 1129 648 0401. I checked the parts list for this saw and it calls for a 1129 640 1702. Not sure what the difference is if any.

Why is the chain getting pinched when I tighten the cover? NOS bar 3005 802 4809 and NOS chain 3636 005 0050 / 63PMC3.

Chain pinch issue resolved. I took the cover off and pulled the clutch. I think the clutch sprocket was not seated into the grooves on the oiler gear properly. The cover gap actually closed up a little better but it's still not tight.

First of all, congratulations on getting your hands on the best saw built by anybody ever IMO except its predecessor 020T. I have 3 of them personally and dealt with them for years at work. Those side covers take a bit of finesse getting them seated sometimes. That pin you referenced is sometimes the culprit, either slightly bent or has worked its way out slightly. A build up of gunk in the cover around the chain brake should also be removed. Glad you got the chain free and often those covers wont fit perfectly. @STIHLTECH can probably check those part numbers you've given to see if they are correct

Thanks hunting1. I've been wanting one of these saws for a long time but never pulled the trigger until now. What's your "must have" list for replacement parts? Is there a way to confirm I actually have a 200T by serial number? It looks like some parts are interchangeable with other Stihl saws so I was wondering if the wrong parts can end up on the wrong saw?

Everything's clean so I think it's the pin. I might take a dremel tool it eventually to shorten it up just a little.

I'm just not familiar with any knock offs that might exist. All of mine came from a dealership.
As far as mods, I opted for a 16" bar for a little more reach on trimming trees manually aloft and a little more capacity removing larger leads but the standard 14" bar suits most needs. Clean, fresh fuel always recommended and though expensive, replacement air filters. There are plastic limiters on the carb for mixtures. Those can be removed for further adjustments but usually if that was needed it just indicated a future carb replacement was going to be needed. The kill wire is an occasional replacement item and you'll have to pay attention to dismantling several things to get it all back right. I take pictures fom different angles sometimes of stuff that looks complicated as i go. Check the spark arrestor screen periodically or if it seems sluggish. I'd just burn mine clean with a small torch but their might be better ways. Other than that or a rare crack in the boot from carb to cylinder, i think you'll have good service from it with normal use.

I have an MS200 with a rear handle. It’s my go to saw.
I run a 16 inch Stihl .043 guage bar and chain on it works great.
Bought an Amazon carb for it. Ran it for a while. It didn’t perform great so I ultrasonic the old carb put in a proper zama kit. Works like new again.

It's awesome that you managed to sort out the issue with your saw! It sounds like you received a lot of great, practical advice. It's really interesting to see how many people have their own tips and tricks for keeping those saws in top shape.
