I've never had that happen to me. But close calls like that really show why it's so important to keep up with equipment care and pay attention to what's around you. Always check your saw before you use it to be sure it's in good working order.

Secondhand story - old friend doing storm cleanup for a neighbor down the street. The two wives were chatting (a little too) nearby, face to face, the usual "personal space" apart. Cutting a piece under a significant spring-pole load, let loose when he didn't expect it. Piece flew right between the two wives' faces and landed safely. He himself was wearing no PPE except gloves.

There's also an irony in what he did for a living at the time. Not going to share that detail where the whole world can see it.
