Hard starting on old 181

I got my dad's Husky 181. It's a great saw and has lots of power, but starting it is hard work! Has anyone tried putting a decomp valve on one of these?

The 181 is a solid tool, but yeah, that compression can wear you out!
Sure you'd benefit from a decomp valve, not just for starting but also for the longevity of your starter and rope.
You'll need a decomp valve kit and a drill press to do it right.
Just be very careful with your measurements and drilling, and you'd want the valve to be in the right spot and threaded cleanly.
There are some good videos on YouTube showing the process, but if you're not comfortable with it, a local small engine shop that deals with saws should be able to do it for you!
It's actually common mod for those big old Husqvarnas.

Another solution isn’t to install 2 or 3 base gaskets. Lowers compression just enough without much compromise in power.
I did this with a Stihl 510cut quick that was a brute to start. Works great.

I agree with @JJoe_257! Just make sure that you do not damage the cylinder. If you are not confident doing it, let a professional do it for you.

had the same problem before. try to add a valve. you can drill and tap the cylinder head to install a decompression valve, similar to those on modern pro saws, making it much easier to pull
