I own a ms stihl250. My brother has MS361 and a old MS290. Dad had a Homelite c51 which we all cut our teeth on , then went to homelite 360 which was a absolute nightmare to keep running . Finally convinced dad to up grade to a Stihl 056, which I really liked, & we never looked back. Towards the end Dad picked up a Husqvarna rancher 445 which is Ok a touch on the finicky side when cold, my son has it now.
 
Love that lineup! Feels like a real chainsaw family tree! I saw my uncle clear land with his beat-up Homelite Super XL, so I know the pain of keeping those old ones running. That 056 is a beast though. How did it hold up over the years? And does your son still use the Rancher for regular work or just light stuff now?

The 056 did about 20-25 years of fire wood cutting & keeping house toasty warm. Originally it came with a 36" bar but that was a bit much for it & dialed back to a 25" bar it balanced out really really nice....towards the end it lost the crank seals and Dad had those replaced and it ran great, but Dad got nervous about it traded for the MS361. I wish we had the 056 back. For dad as he aged it was a bit much for him and the MS 361 was a bit lighter for him. As for the Rancher my son has ....yeah its on light duty with just yard trimming, no longer heating the house with wood
