Winter air filters versus summer filters when should you really make the switch

You’re checking your car for cold weather, lift the hood, and suddenly you’re left wondering if that dusty filter made it through summer a bit too well.
Should you change it out with the seasons, wait for signs of trouble, or just keep it until it starts to complain?

Now, I check the filter during oil changes.
If it seems even a bit questionable, I swap it out.
Filters are inexpensive trying to diagnose weird performance issues is not.

After dealing with sluggish starts one winter, I decided to swap out my filters more often. I don’t stick strictly to seasons, but if it’s dirty or smells off, I’ll replace it. Engines need to breathe, especially in the cold.

I used to completely ignore filters until a rough idle changed my mind. Now, I check them at every season change. If it looks like it survived a dust storm, it’s time to replace it. Cheap insurance, really.
