038 Super Carburetor

Looks like my used 038 has an aftermarket carb. Looks like there are two OE carb choices 1119 120 0650 and 1119 120 0651 both Bing. How can I find out what carb was on the saw new? Or will either Stihl carbs work?

You might want to look for the original serial number or check a Stihl parts list since they usually include the OEM carburetor details. If that’s not an option, most Bing 038 carbs will work with each other just make sure to adjust the idle and mixture settings to keep the engine running smoothly.

Honestly, finding the exact original carb feels like a scavenger hunt. Either Stihl Bing 038 carb can work well, just be prepared to make some adjustments to the idle and mixture. If you hit a dead end a Stihl dealer can match it up with your saw’s serial number

Not really looking for the exact original carb. I just want to know what the original was so I can get whatever Stihl recommends to replace the original. Basically I want to put the correct carb on the saw.

I did some digging and it seems that both Bing carbs should work. The different part numbers are typically for running changes during production. To find your original spec, check the serial number on your saw's data plate and call a Stihl dealer, they can look up which carb came on your specific unit. That said, either OE Bing will likely perform fine. The main difference is usually jetting for different altitude/emissions requirements.

This saw is an AVS Farm Boss. Are there different carbs for the base 038 and the Magnum? I want to make sure I get the correct carb.

I’m no expert, but I did some checking on my own. You’re absolutely right the 038 Magnum has a different carb than the standard 038. Since the Magnum has a larger displacement, it requires different jetting. The AVS Farm Boss is generally the standard 038, not the Magnum. And you’re correct that Tillotson was also an OE supplier for these saws. To make sure you get the right carb, just give your dealer the full model number from your data plate (it should say "038 AVS" or something similar) along with the SN. They can confirm whether you have the standard 038 or the Magnum version and help you find the right carb. The two Bing part numbers you found might be for different versions (standard vs. Magnum) or might reflect running changes

Stihl had MUCH trouble with that carb. Plastic modular plate for inlet seat. Had to replace every one.
The BING was great, but VERY expensive. Go by the BING numbers given to cross over. It may be a ZAMA clone you will find.

Thank you for your insight. Do you know if the 1119 120 0602 will fit fit my 038 AVS? I'm also seeing the 1119 120 0605 for the 038.

I have found several of the 0602 and 0605 and all claim it will fit the 038. Obviously I would like to verify first. As you said the 1119 120 0650 and 0651 are very expensive!

The later 038’s had bings with a compensator. The horn on the metering cover that plugs into the air filter.Bings were great carbs but even kits are pricey.

OE. I have learned my lesson! Cost not an issue as long as it is OE.

I agree. Initially I wasn't sure if there was a different carb for each 038, i.e. 62cc, 66.8cc and 72.2cc. I would think there would be a different carb for each but so far I have found nothing that indicates that there is.

The other issue is finding out the Stihl part number for each carb manufacturer. Which part numbers are Tillotsen and which ones are Zama? The Bings I believe are the 0650 and 0651 (last four). Ideally I want a carb that I can still find a rebuild kit for the inevitable 5-10 years down the road, if not sooner.

I would not dwell on the Super and Magnum difference. From what I have seen, it is adjustable enough that there is no issue.
Also, I see no way of looking up a Super presently.

Do you have a carb now?
Is it a bing?
If it is put a kit in it
Once again look for a wrecked saw if you need a carb
