How far can I push it?

Thinking about swapping to a 24" replacement bar and chain on my Stihl MS271 but heard it could strain the engine. Is this a real risk or can it manage without turning into a smoking mess? I'm looking at Stihl MS271 replacement bar and chain options but safety is my top priority. Any advice before I commit?

yeah I think it can strain the engine pushing a longer chain. Might be okay for lighter, occasional use but heavy work could overheat it. For safety and saw life, sticking to the stock size is usually the smarter move. Just my thoughts! hope you sort it out soon!

50cc saw, 18" bar.
Used to be 50/55cc used a 16" bar. I realize bars are longer with newer saws, thus 18" bar. IF and I do say IF you needed it for 1 tree (your own yard) 24" bar you could get by. GOD thats awful long for that little saw.
Steady diet of a 20" bar for that saw, I'd be saving $$weekly for a new saw.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Seems like a 24" bar might be more than my MS271 can handle for regular use. For safety and smooth operation, will stick with a lighter bar and save the big jobs for when I upgrade to a bigger saw.

Yeah, I've decided to hold off and stick with something that won't push the MS271 too hard. I'll keep it around 18" for now and maybe look into a 20" if I'm only doing light cuts. Planning to upgrade to a bigger saw next season if I start tackling larger trees more often.

It makes sense to pair your saw's capabilities with the tasks you need to tackle. The MS271 should do a great job with 18" cuts, and if you're looking to make light cuts, a 20" bar is a solid upgrade. Does the 20" bar slow things down much on thicker wood? And when you upgrade, are you thinking pro-level like the MS362 or something bigger?

The 20 bar is good enough when I'm cutting small stuff, but the MS271 bogs down in thicker wood. I'm thinking of getting an MS362 next time I upgrade.

@barnhart88 thanks for the questions. @SawdustKing is right about the 20" bar, that matches what I'd expect. As for an upgrade, yes, a pro-level saw like the MS362 is what I'd be looking at for the next step up. It seems logical for bigger wood.

The motor just isn't sized for that much bar. You'll get chain speed drop, more heat, and faster wear. If you really need 24", better to look at a bigger saw than force the 271 into it.

I agree with everyone. 18 inch maximum

Also puts too much strain on bar mounting area. The studs are screwed into plastic ( or whatever Stihl calls it).

I've run a 20 inch on my MS-280. Not sure how much smaller a 271 is. You might eke by with a 20"-er. Joining the dog-pile, definitely not a 24.
