remington mighty mite recoil assembly

I have a problem with the recoil assembly on my mighty mite chainsaw.I went to pull start it and nothing grabbed. I took off the recoil case and found that the rewind assembly was off and laying on the flywheel.I put it back together ,,as i thought it would go,but now it dosnt catch/grab,,and sometimes wont recoil.There were only two washers a spring and a screw that i could see.Am i missing something? Thanks

It seems like the recoil pawls aren't engaging with the flywheel dogs the way they should. Make sure the spring tension is set right and that the pawls can move freely. Don’t forget, the order you put things together is important, start with the pawls, then add the spring, and finish with the washers. If they look worn out or stretched, you might need to get some new pawl springs.

are the pawl springs the little ones on the ends of the little arms ? Or the one that goes under the pawl itself? I have no idea with order they go as i say,it flew apart,inside.The top washer was worn,and everything went over the screw. I dont even know how many washers there were. Are these the amount of washers it is? And does everything look good to you?

They are not. Usually a fibre washer in either side of the pawls. Make sur pawl assembly goes on the pulley so that they will spring out when rope is pulled. Usually a thin washer that covers most of the pawl assembly, goes on top of the pawls assembly.
Your washer looks homemade. Also, after you figure out which is the leading edge of the pawls, clamp the assembly in the vise and carefully sharpen the edge at a slight angle so that it bites into the cup on the flywheel.
There should be lots of these parts around. Old 08 , 041 Stihl’s used a similar set up.

Thank you for the awesome advice. When it flew apart i only could find one fibre washer,and a reg washer. Can i use a reg washer in place of the other missing fiber washer? The pawl (arms) are positioned so one end fits behind a small bump on the plastic part,,i assume they have to be positioned that way? The recoil turns with the rope,but things just dont grab. Dosnt seem as though those arms are coming out far enough. This has had me pulling my hair out ,for two weeks.I just couldnt find anything about these online ,till you told me how many washers i need.But as i say,i only have one fiber washer ,and i assume it has to be facing the right way? may have to use an ordinary washer to make the count... Thank you !

o made a washer and filed a long hole in it...would that work?

Find a picture of an 08 Stihl on line. Look for the oldest rewind pic. It’ll show you the sequence and a number for a fibre washer. It’s not exactly the same but should help you.

I had a look at the pic of the inside of flywheel, there is not much inside for the pawls to grab, looks like it has the guts ripped out.
