Does it currently run?
If so, run it. Don't let it sit. Regardless of type of fuel (ethanol vs non ethanol) letting a saw sit isn't good for it. If has been sitting, a good idea is to replace the duke filter and fuel lines.
Is it clean? Or is it caked up with saw dust?
Packed saw dust traps heat. Pull it apart (clutch cover and flywheel cover) and give it a good cleaning. Compressed air is your friend.
Keep your chain sharp. A dull chain puts more stress on a saw.
Learn to file your own chains. I just spent $30 on a new chain. My saw shop charges $10 to sharpen chains. So by learning to sharpen them you will save some serious money over time.
Run good fuel and oil. This one causes a lot of Internet arguments.
But if you're not a pro running a saw all day, non ethanol fuel is your best bet. Pros use their saws enough that ethanol fuel isn't sitting stagnant long enough to cause a problem.
Oil.. everyone has their favorite. But a good 2 cycle oil is key. I run Echo Red Armor. But I have run Husqvarna oil in the past.
