I have a 281xp which I love but was having issues running as of late. Removed top end and piston has some decent scoring. Should I replace the piston and cylinder with oem or should I go for a larger piston and cylinder?

I'm guessing the cylinder can be honed back to spec right?, so going OEM is the safe route for guaranteed fit and reliability. Upgrading to a bigger cylinder can give more power, but you'll need to check if it's compatible with your crank, carb, and clutch, and it may even shorten engine life if not done right.

if the piston's scored and compression's shot, you're already into it. I'd ditch the fancy oversize option and just slap in OEM rings or a piston kit... way cheaper, still solid. Plenty of guys get away with that unless the cylinder is completely ruined.

Chasing OEM on a 281xp is a waste, aftermarket big bore kits outperform, last nearly as long, and cost less. Purists cling to OEM, but performance users know better
