I've got an old Sithl farm boss 290, I haven't used this for a while and i am thinking of changing the chain size for a little more reach and longer chain.

. Has anyone tried a longer setup on their 290? also, if that's a bad idea for some reason, let me know! I'm no pro, but I love this saw.

What size bar and chain are you currently running? What size are you try to go to?
I've never had a MS290, but from what I know of from people that run them, anything over 20" will likely start to be to much. And a 16" or 18" will probably be the most ideal for hardwood.

A longer chain could give you more reach, but you might run into issues with the bar and chain tension and it could throw off the balance, has anyone tried it on their 290 without problems?

Have you checked if the bar length on your 290 can handle a longer chain, or would you need to upgrade that too? It might affect the saw's balance and performance

What bar length does it have now?
20" bar maxes it out for around the home or farm, daily use 18" would be the most I would run with it.

I re-condition 1127-series saws exclusively. The 290, or 310 are champions of the firewood pile with an 18" set-up, regardless of pitch. When using a 20" set-up, the ,325 x .063 x 81 dl bar/chain will cut faster than a 3/8" set-up. A 24" set-up is ideal when running the 64cc MS390. Stay with a 20" on your 290, and go make chips!
