Hardest cut you tackled last year

Looking back at all the cutting you did in 2025, there were definitely some projects that challenged you. What was the hardest cut you made with your chainsaw last year, and how did it turn out?

That big oak had been tilting for ages. It took me a while to figure out how to chop it down safely. It went almost as planned which was a relief, totally one of those times where your heart's pounding, but you're super glad it's over.

Last year, there was this huge pine I had to drop. It was right by the fence. I spent way too long trying to figure out the angles. I took it down bit by bit, and nothing got wrecked. It felt great

Dropping a 55" oak spar about 25ft tall. Massive amount of weight. 5% hinge wood still meant about 3" holding on. Took 4 guys on a rope to topple it over. Only had an 8ft wide alley to drop it in so it took some time and care to get the notch and backcut spot on.

Having tall white and black oaks growing in sandy soil makes for interesting work. However, many of those trees are hollowed barber-chair widow-makers. While using the greatest inspection, caution and safety practices, those I choose to fell are the most difficult.

Full of thrilling moments. Those tricky cuts really emphasize how vital expertise, planning, and safety can be. Glad to know that everything ended up okay in the end.
